Oil by Gary R. Hess

Even though this is an incredibly short poem, I like to think that it holds a lot of meaning in the world we live in today. So many things we do for ourselves yet are bad for those around us.

Where would we be without oil? Honestly, we may be healthier. Let's not kid ourselves. There are alternatives to almost every application oil has. Yes, most are more expensive in the short term. However, long term there is much more benefit. Solar, wind, and geothermal are all quality alternatives in electricity. Even for plastics there are now biodegradable alternatives. Nonetheless, we have to make the choices as a society to better the planet and rid the world of greed.
